With the tax cap for the upcoming school year (2016-2017) at close to zero percent, science and technology projects may be difficult to fund. Government and private grants can provide the funds to bridge the gap. Below are some grants to consider:
New York State Education Department Title II Part B Mathematics and Science Partnership Program
This is a competitive grant program intended to increase academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by supporting and enhancing the content knowledge and instructional practices for teachers of mathematics and science. Partnerships between high-need school districts and the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) departments in institutions of higher education are at the core of an innovative comprehensive systems approach to improve efforts for teaching and learning in mathematics and science
Association of American Educators
Teacher scholarships and classroom grants are available for up to $500 for classroom materials or professional development.
American Honda Foundation
Grant amount range from $20,000 to $75,000 in a one-year period.
Lockheed Martin
Funding to STEM education outreach activities for students as well as multiple partnership programs. Grants are up to $500,000 and submissions can be sent in on an ongoing basis.
NEA Foundation Grants
This is a highly competitive grant application process. Grants are $2,000 or $5,000, and submission deadlines are February 1, June 1, and October 15. Grant applicants must be NEA members.
Project Lead The Way
They have many grant opportunities through a number of partnerships they are associated with, including a partnership with Verizon to offer middle schools an opportunity to apply for a two-year grant. Schools must demonstrate a Free and Reduced Lunch Program eligible student population of 70% or greater
Toshiba America Foundation
Grants are for 6-12 grade teachers who are passionate about making science and mathematics more engaging for their students. 6-12 Grant requests for $5,000 or less are accepted on a rolling basis, throughout the calendar year. 6-12 Grant requests for $5,000 or more are accepted and reviewed twice a year – August 1st and February 1st each year.
